This visual photostory series delves into the lives of three Khuluma mentors—young people who began as participants in our peer-led support groups and went on to become powerful voices in their communities. Khuluma is the South African arm of the SHM Foundation’s flagship programme, Zumbido Health, offering psychosocial support to young people living with HIV, through digital peer-led support groups, career exploration, wellbeing, and skill development.

Each of these mentors joined Khuluma at different moments in their lives—some seeking support, others longing for connection—and found both. Through Khuluma’s mentorship programme, they became peer supporters, youth leaders, and storytellers in their own right.

Narrated in their own voices and brought to life through portraits captured remotely over FaceTime by award-winning photojournalist Elizabeth Dalziel, these stories reflect the everyday power of hope, friendship, and self-belief. From childhood dreams and personal challenges to new careers, identities, and confidence—this series celebrates the unstoppable magic of dreaming.
